GMADA's Alternate Airport Road Opens: Bawa White House to Sector 66-B Now Carries Traffic
The long-promised second route to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport is finally open. GMADA's alternate link road, running from the Sector 65-66 junction near Bawa White House through Sector 66-B, began carrying traffic in the first week of June, days after the authority committed an opening date before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
On May 29, senior counsel RS Khosla told the court on GMADA's behalf that the shorter route was ready and would be operational by May 31. The Bench, hearing a connectivity petition that dates back to 2015, recorded the submission and let the deadline stand. Vehicles started moving on the stretch around June 3.
Why this road matters
Until now, PR-7 was the only way in. Every car from Chandigarh, Zirakpur, Ambala and beyond funnelled through the ISB T-junction, past Bawa White House, left at Airport Chowk, then left again toward the terminal. One corridor absorbing the load of three states.
The new alignment changes that pattern:
- Commuters from the Chandigarh side can now turn off at the Sector 65-66 junction and reach the airport directly through Sector 66-B
- The route trims roughly 3.5 km off the existing journey, with counsel for the airport telling the court earlier that alternative alignments could save over 7 km from the Chandigarh side
- The broader corridor is an 8.5 km dual carriageway running parallel to the main Airport Road, built to a 50-metre width under the SAS Nagar Master Plan
- The package included a bridge of about 180 metres over the N-Choe, part of a construction tender worth roughly ₹62 crore awarded to a Bathinda firm
A decade in the making
The opening closes one chapter of a PIL filed by the Mohali Industries Association in 2015, which argued that poor airport access was holding back commerce across Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh. The litigation outlasted multiple deadlines. December 2025 came and went. So did March 2026. The High Court's pressure in the final hearings appears to have forced the finish line.
The matter is not fully closed. The court has listed the question of the "shortest route", a proposed alignment from the Sectors 47-48 intersection in Chandigarh, for hearing on July 16. Haryana has separately floated a 100-foot-wide road approaching the terminal from the Chandigarh side along the airport's periphery.
For now, the practical effect is simple. PR-7 sheds a share of its daily load, peak-hour pressure at Airport Chowk and the ISB T-junction eases, and the sectors flanking the new corridor gain a second arterial connection they did not have a month ago.

यह सड़क क्यों महत्वपूर्ण है
अब तक, PR-7 ही एकमात्र रास्ता था। चंडीगढ़, जीरकपुर, अंबाला और उससे आगे से आने वाली हर कार ISB टी-जंक्शन से होकर, बावा व्हाइट हाउस से आगे, एयरपोर्ट चौक पर बाएं, फिर टर्मिनल की ओर बाएं मुड़ती थी। एक कॉरिडोर तीन राज्यों का भार वहन कर रहा था।
नया संरेखण इस पैटर्न को बदलता है:
- चंडीगढ़ की ओर से आने वाले यात्री अब सेक्टर 65-66 जंक्शन पर मुड़ सकते हैं और सेक्टर 66-B के माध्यम से सीधे हवाई अड्डे तक पहुंच सकते हैं
- यह मार्ग मौजूदा यात्रा से लगभग 3.5 किमी छोटा है, अदालत में हवाई अड्डे के वकील ने पहले कहा था कि वैकल्पिक संरेखण चंडीगढ़ की ओर से 7 किमी से अधिक की बचत कर सकते हैं
- व्यापक कॉरिडोर मुख्य एयरपोर्ट रोड के समानांतर एक 8.5 किमी लंबा डुअल कैरिजवे है, जिसे SAS नगर मास्टर प्लान के तहत 50 मीटर चौड़ा बनाया गया है
- इस पैकेज में N-Choe पर लगभग 180 मीटर का एक पुल भी शामिल है, जो बठिंडा की एक फर्म को दिए गए लगभग ₹62 करोड़ के निर्माण टेंडर का हिस्सा था
एक दशक के निर्माणाधीन
